ChatGPT Ads for Businesses: How They Work, Costs and When to Try Them (2026)

Most of the business owners we talk to have heard that ChatGPT now shows ads, and most of them have the same two questions. Is it worth trying? And will it work like Google Ads? This guide answers both as clearly as we can, based on OpenAI's own documentation and how we approach new ad channels for clients. Where something is still uncertain, we say so.

What ChatGPT Ads actually are

ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements shown to eligible ChatGPT users. They are clearly labelled as sponsored and appear separately from ChatGPT's answer, typically below the response. According to OpenAI, ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. You cannot pay to be recommended inside the response itself, and anyone promising that is overselling.

That distinction matters. An ad is a chance to be seen next to a relevant conversation. It is not a way to buy a mention, a ranking or a recommendation.

How targeting differs from Google search keywords

On Google, you bid on keywords. Someone types "emergency dentist near me" and your ad can show for that phrase. ChatGPT works differently. Relevance is based on the context of the conversation, so a person describing a cracked tooth and asking what to do next may be a relevant moment for a dental clinic, even if they never typed a classic search keyword.

In practice this means you describe your offer and audience well, rather than building long keyword lists. It also means you have less precise control than with exact match keywords on Google. We think of it as closer to intent-aware contextual advertising than to traditional search.

Campaign objectives and how you pay

When you create a campaign, you choose what you want to optimise for. The main options are:

  • •Views, billed on a CPM basis (cost per thousand impressions). Useful for awareness.
  • •Clicks, billed on a CPC basis (cost per click). Useful for sending traffic to a page.
  • •Conversions, using optimised bidding such as oCPC or oCPM where your account is eligible. This needs working conversion tracking.

There is no honest universal answer to "how much does it cost". Prices depend on your industry, competition, audience and objective, and the channel is new enough that benchmarks shift quickly. We would be wary of anyone quoting a fixed cost per lead before running a test.

Account, campaign and creative setup

The structure will feel familiar if you have run ads elsewhere: an ad account, campaigns with a budget and objective, and ads inside them. OpenAI's guide to creating ads for ChatGPT covers the formats and requirements. A few things we pay attention to:

  • •One clear offer per campaign, for example "Invisalign consultation" rather than "all dental services".
  • •Ad copy that answers the question people were exploring, in plain language.
  • •A landing page that continues the conversation, not a generic homepage.

A budget pacing detail many people miss

If you set a daily budget, treat it as an average across a weekly window. On some days the campaign can spend up to twice the daily amount, balanced by lighter days. If you need a strict ceiling, use a campaign total budget instead. This is worth setting up correctly before launch, especially for smaller businesses.

Measurement: pixel, events and UTMs

Without tracking you are guessing. Before spending, we make sure three things are in place:

  • •The OpenAI pixel installed on the site, with key events such as form submissions or booking clicks.
  • •UTM parameters on every ad link, so visits show up correctly in your analytics.
  • •A simple way to judge lead quality, for example tagging enquiries in your CRM or booking system.

Lead quality matters more than lead volume. Ten enquiries that turn into two booked consultations can be worth more than fifty that go nowhere.

When ChatGPT Ads are worth testing

We usually suggest a test when a business already has a clear offer, a page that converts, and tracking that works. If Google Ads is not set up properly yet, that is normally the better first step, because search demand is proven and easier to measure. ChatGPT Ads then become a complement, not a replacement.

How we would run a first test

  • •Pick one offer and one audience.
  • •Set a campaign total budget you are comfortable treating as a learning cost.
  • •Confirm pixel events and UTMs before launch.
  • •Run long enough to collect meaningful data, then review lead quality, not just clicks.
  • •Decide to scale, adjust or pause based on real numbers.

There is no guaranteed lead volume and no guaranteed placement. Anyone who promises either for a channel this new is guessing.

If you run a clinic, our Google Ads and ChatGPT Ads for clinics page explains how we combine both. Local businesses can see our approach on the local business page, and you can browse all our services or case studies.

Frequently asked questions

Are ChatGPT Ads labelled as sponsored?

Yes. Ads are marked as sponsored and shown separately from ChatGPT's response.

Do ChatGPT Ads influence ChatGPT's answers?

No. OpenAI states that ads do not influence the answers. Paying for ads does not buy recommendations inside a response.

How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?

It depends on your objective (CPM, CPC or optimised conversion bidding where eligible), industry and competition. There is no reliable universal minimum or average yet, so start with a capped test budget.

How do you target ChatGPT Ads?

Ads are matched to the context of conversations rather than exact keywords, combined with campaign settings you choose. You get less precise control than Google keyword targeting.

Are ChatGPT Ads better than Google Ads?

Not as a rule. Google Ads is a mature channel with proven search demand. For most businesses, ChatGPT Ads are best tested alongside Google Ads rather than instead of it.

Can ChatGPT Ads generate leads?

They can, but results are not guaranteed. Lead volume and quality depend on your offer, landing page, tracking and budget, which is why a measured test comes first.
